Stones 101

Rubies and Sapphires

Corundum is commonly known as ruby or sapphire. They have the same physical and optical properties. Color is what separates these precious stones. Corundum is available in a variety of colors. It is also one of the hardest stones. Jewelers sometimes think of red, white, and blue in a different way. Diamond, ruby, and sapphire are the only stones a jewelers’ torch can touch without direct damage to the stones.

Emeralds

Emeralds are considered a precious stone. They are a mineral gemstone from the Beryl family. All emeralds have inner cracks and fissures (inclusions). This makes them more liable to crack under physical impact. Care should be taken when you wear emeralds.

Semiprecious stones

Most other gemstones are in this category. From alexandrite to zircon, you will find a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes of these stones set in jewelry.

Natural stones and created stones

Natural stones are just that, natural. They are made in the earth and many have taken centuries. Created stones are made with the same physical and chemical properties that the earth uses. But man has the option of removing the impurities when we make stones. These stones usually have clearer, deeper color and no visible imperfections as found in natural stones.

Pearls

The variety and value of pearls is almost as great as that of diamonds. Cultured pearls are found throughout the world. Akoya, South Sea, and Freshwater pearls are all cultured pearls. Other types of pearls are available, but these are the most familiar. They are found in many different shades and sizes. Pearls are sensitive to acids, dryness, and high humidity. Try to keep your pearls clean. Put them on after make-up, hairspray, and perfume is in place. At the end of your day, remove the pearls and wipe with a soft cloth. Store pearls in a soft pouch away from other jewelry to prevent scratching. Knots in between pearls help protect them from scratching each other. Have a jeweler check strands of pearls to insure the silk or nylon cord is in good condition.
